Major victory for the revolutionary forces

Tonight at 9:35 pm in Caracas, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced that the amendment lifting the two-term limit for elected officials, won, by a popular vote of 54.36% to 45.63%. With the CNE’s first official announcement by director Tibisay Lucena, 94% of the votes had been counted from the 67.05% of eligible voters who turned out at the polls.

The referendum is a major victory for the revolutionary forces who back President Hugo Chávez, as it gives him the right to run for president for a third term in 2012. It also lifts the two-term restriction for all levels, from municipal to national offices.

By today’s vote, articles 160, 162, 174, 192 and 230 of the Bolivarian Constitution were amended to allow the voters to approve of their representatives for unlimited times.

The rightwing opposition to the revolutionary process, financed by the U.S. government, will undoubtedly protest the outcome, but the people have spoken.

Really.

Just like the song says.

Here, now, Saturday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, 2009.

This is the day “when the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars.” When “peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars.”

It’s about time. What with economic collapse, climate change and rampant terrorism, we could use some good news.

But what does it mean, and is it really here?

To James Rado and Gerome Ragni, it meant “no more falsehoods or derisions, golden living dreams of visions.” At least that’s what their lyrics for song “Aquarius” in the musical “Hair” say.

Aquarius is oriented strongly toward groups, says San Antonio astrologer Lance Rodriguez. “It’s a sign of the community, civic activism, anything dealing with society,” he says. “A catchall phrase would be ‘group consciousness.’”

The sign also rules technology and inventiveness, and its energy is very intellectual, he says, so being in the Aquarian age taps into that.

TAMPA, Florida  —  Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.

Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure.

Only Renelique didn’t arrive in time. According to Williams and the Florida Department of Health, she went into labor and delivered a live baby girl.

What Williams and the Health Department say happened next has shocked people on both sides of the abortion debate: One of the clinic’s owners, who has no medical license, cut the infant’s umbilical cord. Williams says the woman placed the baby in a plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

Police recovered the decomposing remains in a cardboard box a week later after getting anonymous tips.

Google Earth Now Displays 3D Maps of the Ocean’s Bottom

Google have made their first major update to their popular Google Earth site, upgrading it to include 3D maps of the ocean and ocean floor.

Furthermore, users of the popular site can look at pictures of earth from a historical point of view, and see first hand how over time the ocean has eroded land.

Google made the announcement of the launch of Google Earth 5.0 at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Golliwogs running amok!

Carol Thatcher may have to make a formal apology after referring to a tennis player as a ‘golliwog’ to colleagues at the BBC.

The former prime minister’s  daughter is believed to have made the comment after Thursday’s night edition. It concerned a male player involved in the Australian Open.

Iraq will deny a licence to Blackwater Worldwide, the private security firm accused of killing Iraqi civilians while protecting U.S. diplomats, U.S. and Iraqi officials said on Thursday.

“The operating permission for the firm Blackwater will not be renewed. Its chance is zero,” said Alaa al-Taie, head of the press department at Iraq’s Interior Ministry.

“It is not acceptable to Iraqis and there are legal points against it, like killing Iraqis with their weapons.”
